Who we are

Flyway is a free app that helps people reduce bird–window collisions and protect birds. It offers three tools: a window safety check, a way to report a bird collision (US only), and a rescue-center finder (US only). Flyway is a free, non-commercial app that does not sell data or show ads. Flyway is operated by an individual developer. Questions? Contact us at support@flywaysafe.org.

The short version

Information we collect

Location. With your permission, we use your device location (or a location you tap on a map) to: look up which bird species are local residents vs. migrants for your window assessment, find nearby wildlife rescue centers, and attach a location to a collision report. You can use a map tap instead of GPS, and you can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings at any time.

Collision reports. If you report a bird collision, we collect what you provide: species (or “unknown”), the bird's condition, date and time, location, and an optional photo.

Camera and photos. With your permission, the app can access your camera or photos so you can add an image to a collision report. Adding a photo is optional, and the app will not access your camera or photos otherwise. You can deny or revoke camera and photo permissions in your device settings at any time.

How we use your information

How your reports may be shared

Collision reports contribute to citizen-science understanding of bird mortality. Reports you submit may be shared with the dBird database, based on the status of the bird. We share only what's needed for research and never sell your data.

Service providers

We rely on a third party (Cloudflare) to host the privacy policy and our website. They process data only to provide their services to us.

Third-party bird data & attribution

Flyway's residency/migration estimates use data from the eBird Status and Trends Project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, eBird.org. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions expressed in Flyway are those of the developer and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Data retention

We keep collision reports and window assessment data for as long as needed for the app's research and conservation purposes. An individual cannot be determined from any data we collect or ask for.

Your choices & rights

Children's privacy

Flyway is not directed to children under 13, and we do not have a way to collect their personal information, location aside.

International users

Flyway as an app is available globally, however the rescue center and collision reporting features are only available within the United States. If you use Flyway from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States, which may have different data-protection laws.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy; we'll revise the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, provide notice in the app. We will also add key changes below.
